Death Guard Progress

One of the reasons I've been nervous in the past about collecting a Death Guard Heresy Era force has been the somewhat daunting prospect of painting one or more vehicles. White on an individual miniature is fairly easy to achieve reasonably well but I wasn't sure how I would tackle a larger model.

Therefore before I went mad on the Forgeworld site with next month's mortgage (I joke - just in case my Lord-of-Terror is reading this), I 'borrowed' an unpainted Diemos Pattern Rhino and tried out an experimental paint scheme.

One of the benefits of a white based paint-scheme is that it's fairly quick to complete and therefore I managed to complete this model in just a few evenings work. However one of the drawbacks of a predominately white based scheme is that it's hard to cover up mistakes.

There are a number of things I'll do differently next time, primarily I'll remember to use a gloss-varnish coat before I start with the oil-paint weathering (oil stains white acrylic very quickly) and I'll also use a smaller brush for some of the weathering powders.

Overall however, I'm fairly happy with the outcome and as a result, I'll be attempting something bigger soon.
As usual, while awaiting various things drying completely I also finished a number of other miniatures. These included another three Tactical Astartes for my first Mark II plate Tactical Squad.
I also have completed another three 'wash' based Daemonettes
Finally, once again illustrating that I have the attention span of a very distracted gold-fish, I also painted a Necron Lychguard in a rust based paint-scheme I'd been thinking about for a while.

  1. That is sweet looking. How are you using the oil wash, I'm hearing a lot about it and would like to give it a go with my own NL army. What do you recommend?

    1. Thanks for the comment. I'd suggest having a look at the first Imperial Armour masterclass book (if you haven't already). It explains the basics of the oil-wash method and was the inspiration for everything I've done so far. I'll try and get round the posting a tutorial on my approach soon too.

  2. Brilliant Deathguard again, loving the Rhino... something bigger eh? Spartan? Typhon (almost named after Typhus!) or bigger still? Fellblade!!??

    1. Thanks you! I'm still debating what to paint next - Fellblade would be my first choice but I've already got one. I suspect it will be something based on the Spartan chassis.

  3. Wow you crank out a lot of cool stuff! The death guard and daemonettes are particularly nice. The Necorn could use some metal showing in various places where the rust might have rubbed off, but its a solid start. Must resist the pull of Pre-heresy...finish DV box first...Lady Inquisitor, raising eyebrow...pray for me...

    1. Thanks Zab. Your suggestion regarding the Necron is most appreciated. After I logged off last night I took another look at the picture and thought it was a bit off what I originally wanted. I'll put some bare metal back in and post an update.

Fight the temptation to go Pre-Heresy... My own Lord-Of-Terror is nto amused sharing a house with so many forgeworld boxes...

    2. Just a tiny bit of subterfuge: Take all those shoes boxes she has stored somewhere and toss out the shoes, then fill them with forge world bits. It will buy you some time - of course you'll know with absolute certainty when your time is up...

  4. Brilliant stuff as always. You'll have to let me know how you did the OSL on the Necron, assuming I dig out my ever-growing pile of unpainted bots. You can stop laughing now...
